Proserpine is located in North Queensland, approximately 300 km south of Townsville.

Proserpine is the Roman name for Persephone, the Greek goddess of spring. She was the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and fertility. The Proserpine district has transformed into a prosperous sugar district, one befitting its name.

The Proserpine Sugar Mill first began crushing in 1897, producing 11,000 tonnes. This figure is quite small considering it crushed over two million tonnes in its one hundredth year.
